Lexis developed a passion for acrylic painting in 2000 while taking a workshop that encouraged Abstractionism. Soon after in 2002, Lexis helped complete four outdoor murals under the direction of muralist Omar Ramirez in the East Palo Mural Art Project. The same summer he also studied figure drawing at the San Francisco Academy of Art. Both the mural painting and life drawing helped Lexis define his realism hand. While exploring these more traditional practices in art, Lexis was simultaneously still a full-time participant in the Bay Area street art scene since he began in the mid 1990’s. This is where Lexis originally worked with paint and form. The culminations of these art styles lead to the development of a unique type of imagery. “Subconscious Imagery” was the result which both describe his amorphic shapes as well as the viewer’s often perplexed observation of them. This type of intriguing imagery has been Lexis’ theme throughout his work since 2003 from which it begins to appear in both paint and prolifically in drawings.
